SEO, GEO, AEO, AIO: What’s the Difference, and Does Your Business Need All Four?

You’ve started seeing GEO and AEO mentioned alongside SEO and have no idea if that’s a real distinction or just new jargon on an old service. Here’s the honest breakdown, including what’s actually new and what’s just renamed.
Quick definitions, no jargon
- SEO (Search Engine Optimization): Getting your website to rank in traditional search results. Google, mostly. This is the discipline you already know: keywords, backlinks, technical site health, content.
- AEO (Answer Engine Optimization): Optimizing content so it gets picked as the direct answer to a question in Google’s featured snippets, “People also ask” boxes, and voice assistant responses. This has existed for years under SEO’s umbrella; it’s getting its own name now because it matters more.
- GEO (Generative Engine Optimization): Optimizing so your business gets cited or recommended by AI chatbots and generative search tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google’s AI Overviews and Gemini, when someone asks a question your business could answer.
- AIO (AI Optimization): Used loosely in the industry as an umbrella term covering GEO and AEO together. Basically “optimizing for AI-driven discovery” as opposed to classic blue-link search.
Why this actually matters now, not just as a buzzword
More people are asking ChatGPT or Google’s AI Overview a question instead of typing it into a search box and clicking through ten blue links. If someone asks “best renovation contractor in Petaling Jaya” to an AI assistant instead of Googling it, and your business doesn’t show up in that answer, you’ve lost the enquiry before your website was ever in the running, regardless of how well you rank in traditional search.
This isn’t replacing SEO. It’s an additional surface where visibility now matters, with different rules for how to earn it.
What actually changes in practice
A few things genuinely work differently for AI-driven surfaces compared to classic SEO:
- Clear, direct, quotable answers matter more than keyword density. Generative engines tend to pull from content that states something plainly, like a direct answer to a likely question, rather than content optimized purely for search algorithms.
- Structured data and clean content structure help AI tools understand and cite you. Proper headings, FAQ-style sections, and schema markup make it easier for these tools to parse what your business actually does and answer accurately.
- Being mentioned elsewhere matters more than ever. Generative engines often draw on multiple sources to form an answer like directories, review sites, other articles that mention your business, not just your own website. Your overall online presence, not just your site, affects whether you get cited.
- There’s no keyword ranking to track in the traditional sense. You can’t currently check your “position” in a ChatGPT answer the way you check a Google ranking. Visibility here is judged by whether you show up in relevant AI-generated answers when you test realistic questions yourself. It’s a newer, less precise way to measure progress, and anyone claiming exact rank tracking for AI answers right now is overselling what’s actually measurable.
A fair warning before you invest heavily here
This space is still young and changing quickly. The tools, their source preferences, and how they cite businesses are all shifting. Treat GEO/AEO work as a genuinely worthwhile addition to a solid SEO foundation, not a replacement for it, and be skeptical of anyone promising guaranteed placement in AI answers. Anyone who tells you they can guarantee a specific outcome in a system they don’t control is telling you more about their sales pitch than about the technology.
Where to actually start
- Get the SEO fundamentals right first. GEO and AEO build on a technically sound, well-structured site. They don’t substitute for one.
- Structure your content to directly answer real questions your customers ask, not just to rank for keywords.
- Check your current AI visibility manually. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overview the questions a real customer would ask about your industry and area, and see whether your business comes up at all.
