ChatGPT Ads: What Malaysian Businesses Should Know Before Spending a Ringgit

ChatGPT Ads: What Malaysian Businesses Should Know Before Spending a Ringgit

Your customers are already asking ChatGPT things like “which clinic in Mont Kiara does X” or “best accounting software for a small business.” Now that OpenAI has started introducing ads into ChatGPT, a fair question is whether you should be advertising there. Here’s a practical answer, including what’s still unclear.

What ChatGPT ads are

OpenAI has said it is testing sponsored placements inside ChatGPT. As publicly described, ads are labeled as sponsored and kept separate from the answer itself, and they are meant to be relevant to the conversation. OpenAI has also said that ads don’t influence the answers ChatGPT gives, and that paid tiers are ad-free.

How it differs from Google and Facebook Ads

  • Google Ads catches someone typing a short search. Facebook Ads interrupts someone scrolling. A ChatGPT ad shows up in the middle of a conversation, where the person has usually described their situation in detail.
  • That context could make the intent more specific than a two-word search. Whether it actually converts better is something nobody can claim yet, because there isn’t enough public performance data.
  • The usual advertiser levers (targeting, keywords, formats, bidding) may work differently here.

Who should pay attention first

Businesses where customers research before buying, since those are the questions people bring to an AI assistant:

  • Property and renovation
  • Education and courses
  • B2B services and SaaS
  • Professional services

Be careful with healthcare and finance. Ad platforms usually restrict sensitive categories, and OpenAI has said it limits ads around topics like health. Check the policy before planning a campaign in those categories.

What’s still unknown

A post that skips this would be hype, so here is what to confirm before putting budget behind it:

  • Availability in Malaysia. The initial tests were reported as US-first.
  • Minimum spend and pricing model.
  • Measurement. Can you track leads and cost per lead the way you can in Meta Ads Manager or Google Ads? If you can’t see cost per lead, you can’t judge the channel.
  • Audience size. Ads currently appear only to some users, so your local reach may be small.

How to approach it

  1. Treat it as a test, not a channel switch. Don’t pull budget from campaigns that already produce leads at a known cost.
  2. Set a capped test budget and decide up front what result would justify continuing.
  3. Fix your landing page first. A visitor arriving from a conversation expects a direct answer to the question they just asked. A generic homepage wastes the click.
  4. Track from day one. Set up conversion tracking before spending anything.

How this connects to organic AI visibility

Paid placement in ChatGPT is separate from being recommended in its answers. The organic side is GEO and AEO, which we covered in our guide to the differences between SEO, GEO, AEO, and AIO. Businesses that already have clear, well-structured, citable content are in a better position on both.
